In this tutorial, Echo Sound Works will show you how to make a Neo 80’s lead in Massive. It sounds a little vintage and modern at the same time!
If you don’t know what Neo 80’s is, think M83 Midnight City. It’s a fairly new genre that takes a few key elements from 1980’s music, but with a twist. The drums and bass sounds are most like an actual 80’s track, where as the leads are a little more modern sounding. This Neo 80’s lead in Massive is just that. It has a slight old school vibe but still sounds digital enough to be modern.
The Neo 80’s lead in Massive is only using Oscillator 1 and has a PWM wavetable selected. It is blended with some White Noise from the Noise Oscillator.
One of the most important steps in creating this Neo 80’s lead in Massive is to click on the KTR FLT and turn it off for Filter 1. In this particular instance, turning of the Keytracking for the Filter helps round out the sound a bit more.
Also, pay close attention to the Envelope shapes as they modulate a few destinations that will help shape the tonal characteristics of the sound.
