The Step Sequencer That Inspired Ableton
With the sophistication of the modern DAW, it’s refreshing to acknowledge its grassroots. The PX18 Step Sequencer, a sequencer many feel is the predecessor to Ableton, is a magnificent piece of history. By just looking at it, you can immediately see the resemblance to Ableton’s session and arrangement view.
The PX18, developed in 1995, was undoubtedly ahead of its time. In comparison to 2016, the essence of the DAW has not changed. Despite obvious differences and evolutions, we still have the horizontal arrangements and sample triggering concepts we’re all familiar with.
