Ever feel inspired to design your own instrument? This article from The Long + Short goes in-depth in explaining how technological advancements continue to pave the way for new developments in musical instruments, as well as how musical performances can be expressed.
Roger Linn, developer of the Linnstrument MIDI controller, explains:
“You can look at the period between 1970 and 2020 as [one] of transition for musical instruments, when people played music with switches created for data entry, not for creating music.”
Something we found fascinating was that early drum machines like the Roland TR-808 were originally made for the sole purpose of recording band demos, allowing for quick percussion ideas before the real drummer came to the studio. This is like labtops being used as paper weights!
