How Does The Theremin Work?
In this video, we get acquainted with the physics behind the historic and one of a kind synthesizer, the Theremin. Emitting sound without any physical contact from the user, the underlying science behind the instrument is quite fascinating.
In any synthesizer, the oscillator is responsible for producing the sound. Furthermore, the frequency (pitch) of this sound corresponds with the rate at which a waveform oscillates, hence why sub bass has such a low frequency.
The Theremin imitates this concept of pitch, with the rate of oscillation corresponding to the distance from the antenna to the player’s hand. As the hand moves closer, the waveform oscillates faster, producing a higher pitch.
