In this article from Boom Library, we get introduced to four distinct recording devices, receiving in-depth analysis of each devices’ perks and quirks. The spectrogram seen above was produced from sweeping a tone, in addition to white noise, across the spectrum using the Sound Devices 688.

Recording devices like these are well known for recording at incredibly high sample rates, the highest typically being 192 kHz. For field recording, as well as other ambient sounds, we can certainly see why these high sample rates would be necessary.
