PsychoPan – 3D Stereo Panning & Psychoacoustic Spatial Audio Plugin
Add Depth To Any Stereo Mix
PsychoPan is a powerful 3D stereo panning and psychoacoustic spatial audio plugin that lets you position sounds across horizontal, vertical, front-to-back, and distance dimensions. Its intuitive controls make it easy to create immersive depth, movement, elevation, and cinematic spatial effects within a standard stereo mix.
PsychoPan – 3D Stereo Panning & Psychoacoustic Spatial Audio Plugin
PsychoPan takes traditional stereo panning far beyond simple left-to-right positioning. Designed for producers, sound designers, composers, film and game audio professionals, and anyone creating immersive mixes, this psychoacoustic 3D audio plugin gives you intuitive control over where a sound appears within a virtual space—including its horizontal position, elevation, front-to-back placement, and perceived distance.
Instead of restricting your mix to a flat stereo plane, PsychoPan uses advanced psychoacoustic processing to create convincing spatial cues inside a standard stereo signal. The result is a flexible 3D panning plugin that can make sounds feel wider, higher, lower, closer, farther away, in front of you, or seemingly behind you without requiring a multichannel speaker setup.
Go Beyond Traditional Stereo Panning
Conventional panning gives you one primary dimension: left and right. PsychoPan expands that concept into a more expressive spatial environment. Its intuitive XY interface lets you move sounds across the horizontal plane while simultaneously shaping their perceived elevation, making it possible to create dramatically more engaging stereo spatial effects.
Whether you’re placing a vocal slightly above the mix, pushing a sound effect outside the conventional stereo image, creating a fly-by effect, or designing an atmospheric soundscape, PsychoPan gives you direct visual and tactile control over the placement.
Intuitive XY 3D Positioning
At the center of PsychoPan is a responsive XY spatial positioning pad with live visual feedback. Move horizontally to control perceived left-right placement and vertically to manipulate elevation, allowing individual sounds to occupy different positions within the stereo sound field.
The built-in Cinesafe visual guidelines provide useful reference points for film and television workflows, while also allowing you to deliberately push beyond conventional boundaries when designing larger-than-life stereo effects.
- XY spatial positioning pad for intuitive sound placement
- Horizontal panning for left-to-right positioning
- Elevation control for perceived height above or below the listener
- Live energy visualization for immediate processing feedback
- Cinesafe guidelines for cinematic positioning workflows
Create Front-to-Back Depth in Stereo
One of the most distinctive features of PsychoPan is its dedicated Zone Module. Traditional stereo panning can place a sound to the left or right, but it doesn’t inherently tell the listener whether that sound is directly in front or behind them. PsychoPan uses psychoacoustic spectral cues to create a convincing sense of front-to-back positioning within a stereo mix.
Use the Zone control to add depth and directional separation to sound effects, vocals, percussion, cinematic elements, atmospheres, transitions, and experimental sound design. Subtle settings can add dimensionality, while more extreme settings can produce dramatic spatial movements.
Dynamic Perceptual Distance
PsychoPan’s Distance Engine transforms the concept of audio distance into a simple, percentage-based control. Rather than relying on complicated acoustic calculations, the plugin provides five perceptual distance zones ranging from extremely close sources to sounds that appear to exist many kilometers away.
As distance changes, multiple dedicated processing engines can work together to create the impression of a source moving through space. This makes PsychoPan particularly useful for cinematic sound design, game audio, atmospheric production, transitions, effects, and immersive music production.
- Close – intimate, extremely near-field positioning
- Near – nearby sources with noticeable spatial depth
- Mid – natural-sounding intermediate distance
- Far – distant spatial placement and environmental character
- Distant – extreme distance for cinematic and creative effects
Five Independent Distance Processing Engines
The Distance Engine is powered by five dedicated processing modules, giving you additional control over the individual characteristics that contribute to perceived distance.
- ATN – Level Attenuation: Simulates the natural reduction in perceived level as a sound source moves farther away. ATN can also be reduced or bypassed when you want to create distance characteristics without simply making the source quieter.
- PRX – Proximity Effect: Adds intimate near-field characteristics for extremely close sources. Use it for whispers, ASMR-style effects, close-up Foley, sound design, and dramatic fly-by effects.
- WID – Width Loss: Controls the reduction in stereo envelopment associated with increasing distance, helping distant sources feel less immediately wide and more spatially remote.
- DIF – Distant Diffusion: Introduces the impression of environmental diffusion, reflections, and reverberant energy surrounding distant sounds.
- BFE – Big Freakin Event: A cinematic low-frequency enhancement designed to give massive distant events additional weight and impact. Use it for explosions, rumbles, volcanic effects, enormous impacts, and other large-scale sound design.
Built for Music Production, Sound Design & Cinematic Audio
PsychoPan is equally at home in a music production session or a professional sound design workflow. Add subtle depth to background vocals, position percussion around a stereo mix, create movement in electronic music, or turn ordinary sound effects into dynamic cinematic elements.
For film and television, PsychoPan can help position sounds relative to the action on screen. For game audio, it provides an expressive way to create spatialized stereo elements. For music producers, it offers another dimension of control when conventional panning, stereo widening, and reverb aren’t enough.
- Music production – vocals, synths, percussion, instruments, pads and effects
- Cinematic sound design – impacts, explosions, transitions, atmospheres and Foley
- Game audio – directional effects and immersive environmental elements
- Film & TV – screen-focused spatial placement and depth design
- Electronic music – creative movement, stereo positioning and dimensional effects
- Ambient production – layered environments and expansive spatial textures
- Experimental sound design – extreme positioning and unconventional stereo effects
Real-Time Visual Feedback
The PsychoPan interface uses vector-based graphics with a resizable design and multiple live displays. Visual feedback helps you understand how the processed signal is changing as you adjust its spatial position and distance, making it easier to fine-tune subtle placement as well as more dramatic effects.
Per-module bypass controls also make it easy to compare processing stages individually. This lets you quickly determine whether the pan, zone, distance, diffusion, width, proximity, or cinematic low-frequency processing is contributing the right amount to your sound.
Zero-Latency Safety Limiter
Creative spatial processing can sometimes produce unexpected peaks. PsychoPan includes a zero-latency Safety Limiter at the end of the output chain to help catch sudden peaks and provide additional protection during sound design and mixing.
Fast, Flexible and CPU-Friendly
Despite its advanced spatial processing, PsychoPan is designed to remain responsive and CPU-friendly. Its scalable interface makes it comfortable to use across different screen sizes and studio setups, while global and modular bypass controls make experimentation fast and efficient.
Factory Presets for Instant Spatial Inspiration
If you want to start creating immediately, PsychoPan includes factory presets covering common placement techniques and more creative spatial effects. Use them as starting points for designing intimate sounds, distant environments, elevated elements, dramatic fly-bys, wide stereo effects, and cinematic soundscapes.
