Steve Reich Discusses Early Works With Sampling
Classical composer and sampling pioneer, Steve Reich, discusses his early approaches to looping audio, using the old tape machines that were so popular during the inception of sample based music.
Today, sampling can be as easy as ripping audio from a Youtube video. It’s quite easy to take this for granted, and hearing Reich describe this process nearly 50 years ago makes us appreciate the technology we have at our disposal.
If it weren’t for early-innovators like Reich, sampling would not be as popular as it is today. Listen to his famous track, “Music for 18 Musicians.”
