4 Tutorials To Enhance Your Vocal Mixing Abilities

In most songs that feature vocal tracks, the sound of the vocals can be imperative for creating an emotive track that draws in the attention of a listener. However, processing vocals can be quite difficult while trying to get them sounding just right within a mix.

For this, we have compiled 4 tutorials that will provide you additional tools for creating fantastic-sounding vocal tracks within your songs.

1. Tips for Vocal Clarity
In most styles of music, the vocal track is typically front and center, dominating the focus of the mix. Unfortunately, it can be easy for vocals to become buried underneath other elements in a mix – particularly the higher frequencies that matter most in helping the vocal stand out.

The video below will teach you several ways in which you can enhance the clarity of your vocals and help them shine through your mixes.

2. Creating Realistic Vocal Doubles
A common technique for creating big-sounding vocals is to record multiple performances on top of each other. However, when you only have one vocal track and lack the resources to record another layer, it can be quite useful to duplicate the source vocal track and perform subtle, minute changes to the new layers.

When these changes, such as small pitch shifts or formant changes, are applied to the duplicated vocal layers, it creates the illusion of a separate performance. A pitch editor is a fantastic tool for accomplishing this, and most DAW’s will provide this in its stock plugins.

3. Creating Unique Vocal Effects
The video below covers just about everything under the sun for transforming vocal sounds into otherworldly, unique effects. Turning various snippets of a vocal track into bizarre-sounding resonances and pitches can do a world of good for making the overall vocals more interesting within your song!

4. Transient Shaping on Vocals
Vocal tracks should not only be able to cut through a mix, but they should pack a sufficient amount of sonic energy so that the listener gets the full effect from the vocals. A great way to achieve more powerful vocals is by using transient shaping plugins. While the plugin featured in the video is Transient Shaper from Softube, there are a variety of free transient shapers as well.

We hope that you found these video tutorials to be helpful and to have taught you something new! If you are looking to expand your knowledge of vocal mixing even further, we recommend our thorough video course, Vocal Processing: The Ultimate Guide
